On December 1 in Los Angeles, Jashan proposes to Thea, and she joyfully accepts. Overwhelmed with excitement, Thea invites Jashan to spend Christmas Eve with her family in Telemark, Norway. Upon arrival, however, Jashan quickly realizes that the cultural differences between them create tension. Thea decides to delay telling her mother, Anne-Lise, about their engagement, waiting for the “right time.”
For Jashan, the Christmas trip turns into an emotional roller coaster. He finds himself immersed in Teeny Tiny Christmas (a local tradition on December 22), and struggling to fit in as Thea’s family is unaccustomed to his Indian cuisine. In a series of awkward moments, he inadvertently disrupts Thea’s niece while she sings in church, and is also confronted with the ghost of Thea’s past when he learns about Jørgen, a former neighbor who had a five-year relationship with her.
Jashan’s frustrations deepen when he feels increasingly out of place in Norway, especially when he stumbles upon jars of dried garlic and Indian chili spice with labels reading “Hindu” and “Black Boy,” which leave him feeling insulted by the blatant racism he encounters.
